6,5/10 good effort bringing the game on film screen. So, this first film does the job and although not everyone from the game is in it, I m sure all the other favorite characters will appear in the next 2 films and I m looking forward to that. Maybe the lead protagonist is not that interesting compared to the other characters but he seems necessary to keep the story moving forward. Also, the idea to rotate this film's story around the rivalry between scorpion and sub-zero worked it gave some background. Fight scenes get more rewarding halfway through, closer to the game style. Runtime of 1h 50min is works well you will not be bored.
Keep in mind that it's a trilogy, so this first film tries to add some background! Luckily there's not much time spent on meaningless conversations and the scenes get into the action parts faster than you would expect. If you are familiar with the game, you will like it. It’s a damn shame seriously…I’d love for Shao Kahn’s minions (Kintaro and Reiko especially) to get more screen time other than as punching bags.Great visuals, excellent fight scenes, good choices on most of the cast (e.g Kano, Scorpion, Sub-Zero) and just a fun movie overall. Most of the characters aren’t really fleshed out at all, giving you no reason to care whether they lived or died. Unfortunately, that pretty much every bit of character development in the movie. While just a few seconds long, the interaction between the two is gold! In fact, some of the stages are ripped right out of Mortal Kombat X (such as the front of the Lin Kuei temple). I’ll be first to admit that the animations and visuals are decent enough. I really enjoyed the Kung Lao vs Shao Kahn and the Shang Tsung vs Stryker fights for their full on violence and brutality. One young guy, Kenshi, refuses to kneel to Kano those who refuse are obliterated. Thankfully, the fights are brutal and with moves ripped right out of the games (complete with X-Ray sequences to show bones breaking). With the help of three cold-blooded Black Dragon mercenaries, Kano mercilessly destroys town after town in an effort to conquer Earthrealm. There’s little to no build up for the tournament matches and they’re over way too fast to be satisfying.
